Belarus has summoned the British ambassador to Minsk over an "attack" against its embassy in London, during which a Belarusian diplomat reportedly sustained injuries.
The Belarus government on Monday said a group of people inflicted damage on the façade of its diplomatic mission in London and "physically attacked" a number of its diplomats, badly hurting one of them in an incident that occurred on Sunday evening.
In a statement published on its official website, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said that one of its diplomats was treated for a broken nose, light concussion and a broken tooth.
It added that the assailants tried to hide, but some of them were detained by police as they attempted to flee the scene on foot, adding the attackers are thought to belong to a "radical immigrant group" called "Nadzeya."
The attack "eloquently demonstrates the true face and methods of fanatics, whom a number of countries of the collective West are persistently trying to pass off as peaceful protesters," the ministry further said.
It also said that it had summoned Britains acting charge daffaires and expressed its "strong protest" over the attack, demanding a full investigation.
The incident comes as the West accuses the ex-Soviet country of stoking a migrant crisis for "political reasons" and has imposed sanctions on Minsk, which denies the allegation and slams the West for unjust punitive measures.
Nearly 2,000 people camped out last month on the Belarus-Poland border in freezing conditions before the makeshift camp was cleared out by border guards and the migrants were moved to a logistics center.
